Intro of Work in this Field: 2024 Summer Work Summary
Dairy manure is a valuable source of nutrients and commonly used in Wisconsin. In this field study we investigate the use of liquid dairy manure as a top-dress source of N in winter wheat. The objectives of this study are to:
1) evaluate the effect of top-dress applied N on winter wheat response;
2) evaluate the effect of dairy manure as an N source in winter wheat.
The study will be conducted at two locations, West Madison Research Station and Arlington Research Station. Treatments include pre-plant and top-dress applications using UAN (28-0-0) and liquid dairy manure for a total of 18 treatments. Treatments will be arranged in a randomized complete block design in 4 replicates. Top-dress applications will be done at Feekes (F) 5 growth stage. Optical sensor readings will be collected at F3, F5, F8, and Flag leaf. Pre-plant and pre-topdress soil nitrate samples (18’’ inches) will be collected. Headcounts, test weight, 1000-kernel weight, grain yield, and grain N will be determined at harvest
